As I reflect on the beautiful moments from our recently concluded summer camps here in Houston, my heart is filled with immense gratitude. Watching over 20 brilliant young minds step into our elegant space and completely transform over just a few days was nothing short of magical.
Parents often ask me in quiet moments of concern, "Lady VJ, is my child too young for this?" or, "They are already teenagers and so used to American culture—is it too late?"
My answer is always a resounding no. It is never too early, and it is certainly never too late, to give your child the gift of cultural fluency.
Raising a child in the diaspora comes with the unique challenge of blending two worlds. But what we witnessed at camp proved that when we provide a structured, loving, and shame-free environment, our children do not just "learn" their heritage—they fully embrace it. They step into their natural "Naija Confidence" and emerge as true global leaders.

1. The Art of Respect & Greetings (Building Leadership Character)
During camp, we practiced the timeless art of Nigerian greetings. Watching the young gentlemen confidently prostrate and the young ladies gracefully kneel or curtsy to honor their elders was deeply moving.
The Benefit: We are not just teaching them "rules." We are teaching them the profound leadership trait of humility. When a child learns how to appropriately honor their elders and respect those who came before them, they develop a strong, responsible personal brand that commands respect in return.

We didn't just learn; we celebrated! We listened to the classic beats of Sir Victor Uwaifo’s "Joromi," learned to find the underlying rhythm, and danced with joy using our shoulders and our posture.
The Benefit: Connecting to your roots should never feel like a chore. By experiencing the joyful rhythms of their ancestry, children develop a magnetic, commanding physical presence. They learn that their culture is a crown they get to wear with immense pride.
3. The Art of Speaking Well (Cultivating a Commanding Presence)
A polished Nigerian is known for their refined vocabulary and confident delivery. We dedicated time to practicing how to stand, how to project our voices, and how to present ourselves beautifully to the room.
The Benefit: Global leaders must be effective communicators. By mastering their delivery and vocal confidence in a safe space, your child learns how to walk into any room—from a family gathering to a future corporate boardroom—and speak with absolute authority and grace.
4. The Art of Dining (Practicing Mindfulness and Poise)
One of my favorite moments was our traditional dining session. We practiced eating "swallow" and rich Nigerian stew thoughtfully, mindfully, and without making a mess, taking elegant, bite-sized portions.
The Benefit: Traditional African dining is an elegant experience when done correctly. By mastering this, your child learns that they never have to hide or alter what they eat to fit in. They learn to navigate any dining setting with absolute dignity and ease.
5. Helping with Chores (Fostering Communal Responsibility)
We also practiced the art of helping with chores, graciously clearing plates, and working together as a team without needing to be asked.
The Benefit: Global leaders are team players. By reinforcing the Nigerian value of communal responsibility, we are raising self-sufficient, highly capable citizens who look out for one another and navigate the world with a thoughtful, service-oriented attitude.
The camp may have concluded, but our journey is an ongoing one.
